Avoid hetereosexism in your articles
I am disturbed by Kelsey Borrensen's article about the Kindergarten teacher who wore her wedding dress to school and had a bridal shower in the classroom with her students.
I am a retired third grade teacher. I find this teacher's behavior objectionable because 1) it teaches heterosexism and 2) it is an inappropriate use of class time.
You can be sure if she were marrying a woman, the administration would not have allowed this event citing that it is a "controversial topic." Furthermore, young children learn more by what we do than what we say. So, this is one more event that shows children that it is "normal" for a women to marry a man. And because administrations usually would disallow a similar event concerning samesex couples, the little ones get the message that the only acceptable marriage is heterosexual.
This article, therefore, celebrates a school's acceptance of a this heterosexist dogwhistle.
I bet you can't find many stories like this concerning a gay couple.
